De hel van ’63 is een van mijn favoriete Nederlandse films. Het gaat over Elfstedentocht in het jaar 1963 die bekend om een van de koudste winters ooit is.

   Elfstedentocht is een van de grootste sportgebeurtenissen in de Nederland. Het is hardrijden op de schaats door de elf steden van provincie Friesland en van Leeuwaarden tot Leeuwaarden is ongeveer 200km. Wat het bijzonder is is het feit dat deze tocht door natuur, op het echt ijs van de rivieren gaat. En het gebeurt vaak dat de omstandigheden slecht zijn of dat het ijs niet genoeg sterk is en dat de race niet kan doorgaan. Van 1909 tot nu toe waren er alleen 15 tochten. Daarom is het kleine kruisje die als een soort medaille aan de winnaars wordt gegeven zo dierbaar en waardevol. Het nummer van de winnaars hangt van het weer af. Bij zeer gunstige omstandigheden komt meer dan 80% deelnemers terug in Leeuwaarden. Maar als het sneeuwt of het regent daalt dat nummer.

   Het jaar 1963 is bekend vanwege verschrikkelijke weer. Het was heel koud, het vroor 18 graden, het ijs was slecht en het waaide heel hard. De organisators wilden de race annuleren, maar de televisie kwam voor het eerste keer om zo een grote evenement op te nemen. En de televisie was toen iets nieuws en ze konden niet zo maar ‘nee’ tegen de televisie zeggen. De tocht begon met ongeveer 10 000 schaatsers, maar slechts 69 bereikte de finish.

   De film volgt de verhalen van vier personages met verschillende profielen: een soldaat, een arbeider, een boer en een verpleegster. Het is niet alleen de tocht, het verhaal wordt op die manier persoonlijker ook. We zien ze vechten tegen de zwaarste weer in de geschiedenis van de Elfstedentocht om het hoogste eerbetoon te krijgen – het kruisje. Persoonlijk vind ik het altijd leuk als een film ook een culturele kant geeft. 

 The Hell of ’63 is one of my favorite Dutch movies. It is about Eleven cities tour in the year of 1963 that is well known as one of the coldest winter ever.

   Eleven cities tour is one of the biggest sports events in the Netherlands. It is speed skating through the 11 cities of the province Friesland and from its capitol Leeuwarden to Leeuwarden there are about 200km. What is particular for this race it’s that it goes through the nature, on the real ice of the rivers. It happens often that the circumstances are not convenient or that the ice is not strong enough and the race can’t go on. From 1909 till today there were only 15 races. That is why the little cross that the winners receive as a medal is so precious and valuable. The number of the winners depends from the weather. With favorable circumstances more than 80% of the participants comes back in Leeuwarden. But with snow or rain this number decreases.

   The year of 1963 is well known for its terrible weather. It was very cold, minus 18 degrees, ice was very bad en wind was very strong. The organizers wanted to cancel the whole race, but for the first time the television came to film such a big event. The television was then still something new and the organizers couldn’t just like that say ‘no’ to the television. The race began with about 10 000 skaters, but only 69 reached the finish line.

  The movie follows the stories of 4 characters of different profiles: a soldier, a workman, a farmer and a nurse. It is not about the race only, the story becomes more personal as well. We watch them as they battle with the most terrible weather in the history of Eleven cities tour in order to receive the highest honor there is – a little cross. Personally I think is always nice if a movie has cultural background.
